LNG can play a very important role in energy transformation. Its importance to the economy is growing, as are the number of orders for liquefied gas tankers. And even though awareness of this topic in Poland is still small - successively growing and with it the need for professional training in this area. We have told Wojciech Legieć, the founder of Exerters, about LNG, groundbreaking events in this field in Poland and how good training should look like.

Exerters activities can be divided into two main branches. ECDIS, which we talked about previously and LNG. Please tell me this time what your blue fuel business is all about.

Actually, the rules themselves are very similar. We use the practical knowledge that we gained while working with this load. The work of an officer on a ship intended for LNG transport focuses on taking care of cargo during a sea voyage, preparing transhipment plans and their implementation. During the trainings, we pass on our experience to entities operating on the Polish market.

The Polish market is worth mentioning, for example, in April, during the conference "LNG as the future of marine fuel in Poland", the companies from the PGNiG and Lotos groups signed the contract. How do you think, will Polish ports also benefit from the offer of bunkering of LNG ships?

Of course. The new regulations on alternative fuels require ports to extend the offer to the bunkering service of LNG-powered vessels. Currently available methods of bunkering are analyzed in order to select the most favorable for the Polish market. In my opinion, at the present stage for Poland, the key is the existence of bunkering companies on the market as a reliable partner offering LNG delivery. We have great specialists, excellent location in the Baltic Sea, LNG-powered ships are increasing every year and I hope that in a short time we will be one of the leading suppliers of blue fuel.

As you mentioned, the infrastructure itself does not exist yet. So how should the preparation for its creation look like?

First of all, the target group of recipients should be defined and the location where it will be possible to provide such a service. For example - if we focus on the LNG fuel supply for ferries and drivers, it will be necessary to ensure bunkering in the wharf where they moor. This is due to the specificity of vessels on a fixed line. These types of vessels have a tight schedule and the most advantageous solution, both economic and logistic, is the adoption of fuel during a standard stop in the port without the need to extend it. Such examples can be multiplied considering the characteristics of ships for which the demand for LNG bunkering will be determined. The way of providing the service to the recipient should be adjusted. The next step is to create appropriate procedures and finally to build the infrastructure itself. We are in a quite comfortable situation. The bunkering market for ships powered by LNG has been operating in ports of Western Europe for many years. By entering the construction of the bunkering infrastructure relatively late, we have the opportunity to use the experience of countries that have dealt with the topic of LNG bunkering a few years ago.

And what about competition in the Baltic Sea?

We have a very favorable location, human resources potential, LNG terminal in Świnoujście, whose infrastructure is expanding or even cavern in Kosakowo, which was mentioned recently during the conference of the State's Policy of Raw Materials in Gdansk. Therefore, we have very strong arguments among countries that are able to offer LNG bunkering services in the Baltic Sea. The use of the aforementioned resources, the creation of a reliable reloading infrastructure and the development of appropriately adapted procedures make up the effectiveness in building the reputation of Polish bunkering points.

What do your trainings look like in practice?

Training in the use of liquefied natural gas installations usually lasts 3 days. Two of them are devoted to the presentation of theoretical aspects, and one to their practical use. As part of the theoretical issues, the legal bases of national, EU and international law as well as similarities and differences are discussed. This is particularly important for entities that build bunkering points and are obliged to comply with the requirements set out by law. Later, we move on to knowledge about cargo and reloading operations. The training participants, as a rule, already have a certain amount of knowledge, which allows them to focus on more complex program points. Then we go to the reloading operation itself, we show the individual stages, we explain how to secure ourselves, the load, the equipment, the tank, other devices applicable in a specific case. We indicate what should be done to make this operation efficient and safe.

What distinguishes you from the competition?

Many years of experience in working with LNG supported by solid theoretical foundations. Above all, people, our instructors conducting training. We work with people who have practical experience and at the same time have didactic competences supported by IMO didactics certificates. We are characterized by flexibility in approaching the client and the ability to adapt the scope of training to its needs. We often add non-standard items, our experience from emergency situations, which we have had contact with during many years of work with a cryogenic load such as LNG. We show how to react and what to do in such a situation.

In addition, the atmosphere of the classes makes us stand out. Part of the training is conducted in the form of active participation, i.e. dialogue and discussion. The training participants already have experience gained in various places. It's good to see how they share it, find a common language. We moderate discussions, point to a specific topic and dispel any doubts. We also collect feedback after training which is very valuable to us because it allows us to constantly improve.

We focus on security, we take an example from such ports as those in Spain, Qatar or the United States, we strive to develop the LNG market in Poland through the use of work experience for foreign shipowners specializing in the transport of liquefied natural gas for many years.

Why in Poland did we deal with this topic so late?

The most important factor was probably waiting for the construction of the LNG terminal in Poland. We've heard about many plans, development prospects and everything has been focused around establishing the location of the liquefied gas outlet. The construction of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście was a breakthrough in the development of the LNG market in Poland. The production of LNG by cooling the natural gas extracted in our country took place earlier. Changing the state of aggregation makes it possible to supply energy through tanks to places not connected to the heating network. The use of the potential of liquefied natural gas is unlimited, from the power supply of vehicles, factories and hospitals to entire housing estates. It's both economical and ecological solution.

There is still a small awareness of this topic in Poland. LNG is still something mysterious and unknown. Of course, this gas can be dangerous, but with the right knowledge it is relatively easy to control it. The key aspect is the ability to predict the consequences of your actions and the awareness of how to react in an unusual situation. If, for example, we start cooling and expect pressure to rise and it drops - it can not surprise us. During training, we explain why this is happening and we show it in practice. I think that learning about a given load is crucial, it shapes consciousness. Looking at the liquefied natural gas tankers themselves or land regasification stations - they are a miniature version of a small section of the installation, which is equipped with a deep sea liner used to carry LNG.

Which direction do you intend to develop?

The spectrum of LNG use is very wide, which allows us to provide an extensive training offer. We strive to maintain a high level of safety of LNG transhipment operations.

In Poland, the most popular branch of the LNG market today is the issue of bunkering and related issues. The location of our country on the Ten-T network obliges us to create LNG supply points both on land in the form of refueling stations and ship bunker points in ports. Procedures and instructions for ports are created. For economic reasons, mobile solutions are taken into consideration, which will become the introduction to the group of entities currently operating on the market. It must be ensured that all these operations take place quickly, effectively and safely already in these smaller operations. So that customers using bunkering services in Poland could say that it is worth it that we are professionals and operate in accordance with international standards.

I also think that today the most important is cooperation between entities from the LNG industry in Poland. A great example is the Polish LNG Platform, which originates from the Tri-City, but gathers companies from all over Poland. It is very encouraging that during the Polish LNG Conference organized every year - all companies in Poland that are associated with LNG can find a common language, aim for one goal and at the same time understand that the best effect can be achieved by united action.

A visit at the SMM 2018 fair in Hamburg enabled us to get acquainted with new technological solutions used in transport, regasification processes and LNG bunkering operations. This year's fair in Hamburg was a great place for us to establish valuable contacts with companies that have been dealing with LNG for years, and their portfolio is filled with the largest projects. A characteristic feature of big players is their openness to new ideas and problem-free sharing of knowledge. It's very inspiring for us. This is our world in which we open ourselves to new things and learn all the time.

The training job is not boring?

People make it impossible to get bored. We try to reach them and get interested in the topic of LNG. We want to share our experience and make people who leave us can say with satisfaction that they have significantly expanded their knowledge.
